Warrior Cats Codexery

The Outcasts

Cats who cast themselves out of the Code to carve a home in bare rock and open sky.

The Outcasts

The Outcasts are a collective of warrior cats who live beyond the borders of the five Clans and the mountain Tribe, dwelling in a rugged rocky quarry that they have claimed as their own territory. They do not observe the Warrior Code, do not answer to any Clan leader, and do not seek the guidance of StarClan, placing them in a unique social category distinct from both the organized Clans and the scattered rogues or loners who wander the wilds. They first draw the attention of the Clans during the Omen of the Stars arc, when the prophecy-driven journeys of the Clans' cats bring them into direct contact with this isolated, self-governing group. The Outcasts represent a living question for the wider cat world: what happens to cats who reject the Code, the Clans, and even the spiritual authority of StarClan, and choose to forge their own path in the harsh open landscape?

Lore & Background

The Outcasts occupy a liminal space in the social geography of the warrior world. The five Clans—ThunderClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, and SkyClan—govern themselves by the Code, answer to their leaders, and look to StarClan for omens and judgment. The Tribe in the high mountains has its own traditions and spiritual practices. The Outcasts, by contrast, belong to neither system. They are not rogues in the traditional sense, since they form a stable, territorial group with internal social bonds; they are not loners, because they live collectively; and they are not kittypets, because they hunt in the wild. They are, in essence, a self-made nation of cats who decided the Code was not for them. Their territory, a rocky quarry, is a stark and unforgiving landscape of broken stone, narrow ledges, and exposed sky. It is not the lush forest of the Clans nor the snow-dusted pines of the Tribe. Survival there demands a different kind of toughness: cats who can navigate slick rock faces, endure the wind, and make a home where there is little cover. Their culture, whatever it is, has been shaped by that isolation and that terrain, far from the den-bound rituals and the moonstone gatherings of Clan life. Their relationship with the wider cat world is tense. The Clans see them as a disruption to the natural order—cats who have no place in the hierarchy that StarClan supposedly ordained. The Outcasts, in turn, view the Clans as bound by rules they find unnecessary. This friction becomes a source of real danger during the Omen of the Stars arc, when the Clans' cats, driven by prophecy, must cross or skirt the Outcasts' territory, and old suspicions flare into open confrontation.

In Their Own Story

The wind off the quarry floor carried the smell of dry dust and old blood. A young ThunderClan cat, still shaking from the long march through the forest, pressed her belly low against the cold stone and watched. Above, on a jagged ledge that caught the late sun like a blade, a grey-furred cat sat grooming a torn paw, utterly unbothered by the two Clans' cats crouched at the base of the rock. Behind her, half-hidden in the shadow of a broken boulder, another cat's amber eyes tracked the visitors with flat, patient interest. No leader called out. No challenge was issued. There was no Code here, no ritual of greeting, no promise of peace. Just the slow, deliberate turn of a head, the flick of a tail, and the unspoken understanding that this rock, this sky, this thin layer of soil clinging to the stone—this was theirs, and no moonstone, no StarClan, no prophecy had ever claimed it for anyone else. The young ThunderClan cat swallowed hard, tasted grit on her tongue, and thought: we are the ones who are lost out here, not them.

Reader's Guide

The Outcasts are a self-governing collective of cats who dwell in a rocky quarry territory, outside the borders of the five Clans (ThunderClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, SkyClan) and the mountain Tribe. They do not follow the Warrior Code, do not hold moonstone gatherings, and do not seek the guidance of StarClan, making them a third pillar of cat society alongside the Clans and the Tribe. Their territory is a stark, open quarry of broken stone and exposed ledges, a landscape that demands a different survival skill-set from the forest dens of the Clans or the snow-covered caves of the Tribe. Their internal social structure is their own, shaped by isolation and the demands of rocky terrain rather than by the Code's rules on hunting, leadership, and kinship. Their major rivalry is with the Clans themselves, who view the Outcasts as a violation of the natural order that StarClan established. This tension becomes acute during the Omen of the Stars arc, when prophecy-driven journeys force Clans' cats into the Outcasts' territory, sparking confrontations rooted in mutual distrust and competing claims to the land. The Outcasts have no formal allegiance to any single Clan and no recognized leader in the traditional sense of a Clan's head cat. Their history is one of deliberate separation—cats who chose, or were driven, to build a life beyond the Code's reach.
