That changes when the clans are driven to seek the Moonstone cave. The journey north is one of the most harrowing trials a group of cats can face: days of climbing through thin air, sheltering in shallow rock shelves while sleet stings their fur, and navigating paths where the ground gives way beneath their paws. The cold is not merely uncomfortable; it is a genuine threat, sapping strength and slowing the heart. Yet the cats press on because the cave holds the only power that can save them, and the mountains, for all their danger, are the only road to that power. Behind him, the others were still climbing—slow, deliberate, every muscle screaming from the thin air. The peak above them was just a smear of grey against a greyer sky, and the path was nothing but loose scree and the occasional handhold of frozen root. "Keep moving," the leader whispered, and the words cost more than the climb. Snow was beginning to fall, fine and relentless, already dusting the rocks white. Somewhere far below, the forest was a dark green blur, a world of warmth and scent and the comfort of a den. Up here there was only the wind, the stone, and the cold that crept into the bones and refused to leave. But the cave was close. They could feel it the way cats feel a storm coming—a pull in the chest, a hum in the blood. The ancestors were waiting, patient as the mountain itself, and the mountains did not care how tired the paws were or how thin the fur had grown. They simply stood, ancient and indifferent, and let the small, shivering forms pass through their ribs of rock toward the water's song.
