The river ran low that evening, its surface a dull copper under the dying sun. Spottedleaf sat on the flat stone at the water's edge, a bundle of dried yarrow across her lap, her tail curled neatly around her paws. The camp was quiet in the way it had been quiet for weeks now—no young cats chasing frogs, no warriors barking challenges at the border. Just the soft creak of branches and the distant, muffled sound of the other Clans' camps beyond the ridge. She ground the yarrow with her back paw, the bitter scent rising in thin threads. A RiverClan she-cat, young and thin, limped toward her with a gash along her flank that had gone foul in the heat. Spottedleaf did not look up. She simply held out one paw and said, in the flat, unhurried voice she used for everything, "Lay down. It will sting."

The young cat lay down. Spottedleaf pressed the poultice to the wound, and the young cat hissed, then went still, then breathed easier. Spottedleaf watched her for a long moment, then gathered her herbs back into the bundle and stood. The river glittered. Somewhere beyond the trees, a cat was howling—not in pain, but in warning. She walked toward the sound, her paws silent on the stone, and did not look back at the camp.
