Some accounts suggest it was placed or revealed by StarClan itself as a permanent anchor to the afterlife, a stone that would never be moved, never be claimed, never be destroyed. Its whiteness is said to echo the light of StarClan, and the water of the Moonpool is described as unnaturally still, as though the surface holds its breath while a cat listens. The spiritual mechanics of the Moonstone are simple in concept but profound in effect. A cat kneels at the edge of the pool, presses its paws into the cold water, and calls out to a specific ancestor or to StarClan as a whole. In return, a voice—sometimes clear, sometimes a murmur beneath the sound of dripping leaves—answers. Prophecies arrive this way, often in riddles that take years or generations to unravel. The stone does not grant power, heal wounds, or change the physical world; it is a bridge, a listening post, a place where the boundary between life and death grows thin enough to press a paw through. She whispered her question into the pool. The water did not ripple. Then, beneath the sound of her own breathing, a voice—low, unhurried, carrying the cadence of a cat she had never met but somehow recognized—spoke a single line. It was not an answer. The Moonstone is the Clans' oldest and most sacred landmark, a smooth white stone set in the Moonpool near the river. Its sole purpose is spiritual: it is the one place in the physical world where living cats can hear the voices of StarClan, receive prophecies, and speak with deceased ancestors. In the in-story timeline, the Moonstone appears from the very first books and remains a constant throughout the entire saga. It is the site where key prophecies are delivered, where leaders seek guidance before major decisions, and where the boundary between life and StarClan is thinnest. Cats of every Clan may enter the clearing, and the unwritten (and later codified) rule is that no violence may be committed on that ground. Its connection to the Warrior Code is direct. A warrior who breaks the peace of the Moonpool violates not just a rule but the covenant between the living and the dead. In later arcs, the Moonstone becomes a focal point during crises: prophecies are re-examined there, the fate of the Clans is debated in its pool's reflection, and the stone itself is sometimes described as trembling or glowing when StarClan's will is urgent.
