She is the cat who recognized the potential in the housecat Rusty and invited him to join ThunderClan, giving him the apprentice name Firepaw. Bluestar later makes Firepaw a warrior, giving him the name Fireheart after a separate conflict with RiverClan, not immediately following the battle over Sunningrocks. Her deputy is Tigerclaw, an ambitious warrior who secretly murdered the previous deputy in an attempt to become Clan leader. Bluestar's leadership is marked by internal betrayal and external conflict, and she ultimately dies sacrificing her life to protect the Clan from dogs sent by Tigerclaw.

Lore & Background

Bluestar's role as ThunderClan leader is defined by her decision to bring a housecat into the Clan. After watching Rusty fight back against the apprentice Graypaw, Bluestar later formally invites Rusty to join ThunderClan following a dream from StarClan. Bluestar gives Rusty the name Firepaw because of his flame-colored fur. She later promotes Firepaw to warrior, giving him the name Fireheart, after a separate conflict with RiverClan, not immediately after the battle over Sunningrocks. Bluestar's deputy, Tigerclaw, is revealed to have murdered the previous deputy in an attempt to become Clan leader. Tigerclaw later tries to kill Bluestar, fails, and is banished from ThunderClan. Bluestar eventually dies, sacrificing her life to protect the Clan from dogs sent by Tigerclaw. After her death, Fireheart becomes leader, receiving nine lives and the name Firestar.

In Their Own Story

Bluestar stood at the edge of the camp, her blue-gray fur dark against the shadows of the forest. She had watched the young kittypet Rusty fight back against Graypaw, and she saw something in him—a spark that the other cats dismissed. She invited him to join ThunderClan, and when he accepted, she gave him the name Firepaw. Later, after Firepaw led a rescue party to reclaim Frostfur's kits from ShadowClan, Bluestar made him a warrior, giving him the name Fireheart. But the shadow of betrayal loomed. Tigerclaw, her deputy, had murdered the previous deputy and planned to kill Bluestar to take her place. When Tigerclaw's plot failed, he was banished. Bluestar's final act was to sacrifice her life to protect her Clan from the dogs Tigerclaw had sent. Her death cleared the path for Fireheart to become leader, taking the name Firestar.
