Graystripe's story begins in ThunderClan as Graypaw, the apprentice who first encounters Rusty in the forest, not his backyard. Bluestar and Lionheart watch Rusty's reaction to Graypaw's challenge—Rusty does not run away but fights back—leading them to invite Rusty to join ThunderClan. Graystripe forms a strong bond with fellow apprentices Firepaw and Ravenpaw, and when Tigerclaw realizes Ravenpaw witnessed his murder of the previous deputy, Graystripe helps Firepaw lead Ravenpaw to safety at a barn already occupied by a loner named Barley. After Frostfur's kits are stolen by the ShadowClan leader and his warriors, Graystripe joins Bluestar's rescue party and emerges victorious. Because of this, Bluestar gives Graypaw his warrior name, Graystripe, alongside Firepaw becoming Fireheart. At the end of *Into the Wild*, Graystripe and Fireheart perform a traditional silent vigil after their promotion. In *Fire and Ice*, they are tasked with locating WindClan, which had been driven out of their territory. They find the cats under a tangle of Thunderpaths (roads) and succeed in bringing them home. During a hunting patrol, Graystripe almost drowns after chasing a rabbit.

The rain had not stopped for two days, and the ThunderClan camp smelled of wet fur and damp moss. Graystripe crouched at the edge of the clearing, one ear swiveling toward the stream, the other toward the young warriors sparring in the mud. Above him, the canopy dripped in slow, heavy beads, and somewhere beyond the border, a RiverClan patrol was testing the reeds. He did not need to look. He could feel the tension in the air the way a fish feels a change in current—low, patient, waiting. He flicked his tail once, a small signal, and the camp settled into stillness. Whatever came next, he would meet it the same way he met everything: head up, paws planted, and his family behind him.
